Slow travel

Updated: Jan 22, 2022

Do you want to rush collecting as many memories as you can or rather live the moment, adapting to the local lifestyle?

During my travels, I really slowly, during years come to a realisation, that I less and less want to go to another exalted to heaven (“must visit”) tourist place. I think this feeling spiked the most when I was visiting the Victoria peak in Hongkong, trying to get up to the viewpoint between millions of tourists, where people battled for the places where they could take a photo or selfie with an imposing background. (They couldn’t.) After the exhausting getting up, I encountered such people density per square meter that my mood to be part of this craziness has vanished in the haze.

I specifically search for, love those places, where there are a few, or mainly locals. Where you can slow down….. subside, get lost, Yes, get lost. Many feel like, they have to follow the right direction in every single moment. But what is the right direction?

Maybe, if we leave the well-trodden path, we can experience way more interesting events and sights. In my opinion, getting lost during a holiday, retiring, relaxation is exciting, interesting and not least fun.

The slow travel can best be felt if for a couple of weeks (months) we don’t want to cross out all the sights on our list, but just move along with the locals as we try to live their lives.

Visit the local markets rather than restaurants. Use local public transport, buses for travelling. Try to get to know as much as we can of the local’s life, start conversations. Don’t fly from one country to another. Take a trip close to our accommodation. Simply just flow with the existence there and live the moment spontaneously...
