Motorlife with a cat

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

If motorhoming with a dog is a challenge, then it is even more extreme when someone takes their cat on a trip.

Cats' personality is different from dogs' and the range of problems that may occur during traveling with them is wider. But this doesn't mean that this is an impossible task, because there are many motorhome travelers that don't want to leave their cat at home either.

In terms of traceability, it’s important to point out that while a dog is much easier to call in, a cat tends to walk large areas in a short time, likes to explore the area alone, or even wander far away from the camping spot in hopes of a good little hunt. For this reason, it is very important to put a microchip in your kitten. All veterinarians can identify all the data of the kitten based on the code that can be read from the microchip. However, if we want to be absolutely sure, we can also equip the kitten with a portable gps on the collar, which can be connected to our phone and can provide up-to-the-minute information about the cat's current position, so that we can easily find our adventurous cat if necessary.

-Cat harness and leash: If you want your kitten to take an active part in all the experiences you go through, you may want to get it accustomed to enduring the cat harness and leash. This is not an easy task. Compared to dogs, cats will require more patience and it depends on the breed how willing the cat will be to put up with the situation. This should be practiced at home with the kitten before going on the trip.

To make it easier for our kitten to adapt to the new situation, we can bring the cat's everyday objects with us, such as the feeding bowl, the blanket (if there is any) and the scratcher (this can also save the upholstery of the motorhome).

In conclusion, whether we travel with a dog or a cat, it is worth it, because we get back more energy than we invested with their unconditional love, the playing, kindness and heartwarming moments.
