Updated: Feb 6, 2023

April: 21 degrees Celsius

Antequera, this old Andalusian town (not far from Malaga) in Spain has been inhabited for thousands of years. For the geological attractions and Moorish fortress, it is worth a visit in the spring season. The city is less well known as an attractive holiday destination. Ronda, Seville, Cordoba and Granada attracts more tourists. Antequera is a hidden Andalusian jewel for those who have the opportunity to visit. It is located 50 km from Malaga, so it can be an additional part of a trip to Malaga.

Antequera has an important role in Spanish history in architectural terms. With the 33 churches and the Moorish fortress of Alcazaba, the town has many attractions. The Alcazaba was an important military fortress and a wonderful surviving monument to the Moorish and Christian heritage. There are also museums, art exhibitions, restaurants, beautiful squares and charming streets.

About 10 km south of the town is the nature reserve of El Torcal in the Sierra del Torcal mountain. The unusual karst formations here are considered one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The area covers 17 square kilometres, with the highest point at 1336 km. Alleyways between limestone blocks and other underground formations are hidden in the millions of years of remains. Visits are recommended mainly in autumn and spring due to the extreme weather conditions. There are several hiking trails of varying difficulty and many scenic viewpoints.
